Cheer Up, Buttercup! Aug. 30-Sep. 5

Sure, it's Monday. But that means a whole new entry of Cheer Up Buttercup, offering events in and around the Sacramento area for the upcoming week. With a range of events from family-friendly to arts and sports, you can cheer up, buttercup!

FAMILY AND PETS:
Aug. 30: FREE! Target Free Admission Day at the Sacramento Zoo
Bring a new, unwrapped school supply item to help children in need and get free admission to the zoo.

Sep. 3-5: 47th Annual Greek Festival
Head over to the Sacramento Convention Center for the annual Greek Festival presented by the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. There will be authentic Greek food, Greek folk dancing, a marketplace and cooking demos.
$5. Seniors 55+ get in for $4. Children 12 and under get in free. Get in for free Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sep. 3-6: FREE! Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento
Want your family to experience some more lively history lessons? Maybe have an 1850s costume you think is the tops? Old Sac is holding Gold Rush Days over Labor Day weekend. You may stumble upon a gun fight, musicians playing period music and will definitely see costumed re-enactors. Don't wear your most valuable shoes, they'll be dumping 200 tons of dirt on the streets for a more authentic feel.

Sep. 4-6: FREE! 20th Annual Chalk It Up
Head down to Chalk It Up! See the artwork and non-profit organization that brings in money for Sacramento children's art education programs. There are sponsored squares but also community squares, so bring chalk and show off your art skills.

Sep. 5: Fairytale Town shows "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"
Catch the Gene Wilder classic at Fairytale Town. A couple things to warn you about; it's lawn seating only and no outside food/drink is allowed.

Catch the Linda Bracamonte Band at The Fountains in Roseville. Bracamonte is a blues singer and Sacramento native. The band consists of Bracamonte, Ema Roberts, Lance Davis and John Swanson.

Sep. 2-6: Strawberry Music Fall Festival
Held at Camp Mather, the fall version of the Strawberry Music Festival will feature music, kids' activities, camping and family festivities. The festival's website advises kids to bring bikes and helmets, wagon, sand toys for Birch Lake and glow sticks/necklaces. If you're camping there, remember to bring a tent and warm sleeping bag, sunscreen, sleeping pad, flashlight and other camping accessories. Visit HERE for a list of things to pack.

Sep. 4: FREE! The Junk Funkies perform at The Fountains
The Junk Funkies, a Sacramento area funk cover band, will perform at The Fountains in Roseville.

FAMILY AND PETS:
Aug. 28: FREE ADMISSION! Kitten Adoption Day sponsored by Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary and Extra Space Storage.
Kittens 3 to 6 months old will be up for adoption to find their safe and happy forever homes. Free kitten food will be supplied for those adopted (while supplies last). The kittens are tested, vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped. Adoption fees are $50 for one kitten, $60 for two.
There will be complimentary food and drinks, drawing prizes and giveaways.

Aug. 28: Kids' Engine Class at The California Automobile Museum for kids in the 5th to 9th grade
Want your kids to learn a basic skill? Are they interested in cars or engineeringly inclined? Ever wanted to know how an engine works and have a kid to use as an excuse? The California Automobile Museum will hold a three hour long hands-on class on how a gasoline engine works.
A Briggs and Stratton one cylinder engine will be taken apart and visitors will learn how gases, liquids and solids interact to make it all work.
Tickets come in pairs for a child and their guardian. $25 for nonmembers and $20 for members.

Aug. 28: The MegaRamp ASA Triples tour comes to Arco Arena. Freestyle BMX stars from the X Games will try out the 195-foot long course. Two competitors at a time will take on a 25-foot high ramp, two 25-foot wide jumps and quarter-pipe to advance to final rounds.
Tickets range from $17.50 to $67.50 for adults. Groups of more than 10 get a discount. Don't forget $12 for parking which opens at 5 p.m.

Aug. 28: Battle of the Badges VII at Memorial Auditorium
See Larry "Pitbull" Fernandez of the California Dept. of Corrections fight Carlos Cabrera of the Sac Sheriff's Dept. in this charity event to benefit The Firefighters Burn Institute, Sacramento Sheriff's Toy Project and The Sac Fallen Officers Resource Fund.

Aug. 28: 12th Annual 5K Run/Walk Race for the Arts
You can run, walk, or put your kids in a fun run to benefit our state's non-profit performing, cultural and visual arts organizations as well as school music, drama and art programs.
There will be interactive booths, live music and post-race refreshments.
Registration is $30 for adults, $15 for kids 12 and under.

The silent auction includes numerous Rogers jewelry, art, trips, gift certificates and services.
All proceeds from the raffle and auction will go to Friends of the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary, a non-profit organization that supports the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary.

Aug. 28: FREE ADMISSION! Second annual Blues, Brews & BBQ in Downtown Napa
Forget the wine and go for barbecue, beer and blues with beautiful Napa as the backdrop. The event will have three different stages featuring Bay Area blues musicians and barbecue from top Napa chefs. A beer garden will have more than 20 micro-brewed beers for guests, and a rib-eating contest for the brave and hungry.
