Cheer Up, Buttercup! Feb. 14-Feb. 20

Cheer Up, Buttercup was missing last week, you may have noticed. I apologize but I had important matters to attend to concerning my beloved pup. Well, not so much pup but 12-year-old dog. But CUB is back! Cheer up this gloomy, rainy week with some activities around town.

FAMILY AND PETS
Feb. 16: Wee Wednesday at Crocker
Children ages 3-5 are invited to this museum-based play date. It is free with museum admission. Sign-up begins at 10 a.m. at the admission desk.
Adult admission is $10. Seniors and college students get in for $8. Youth ages 7-17 get in for $5. Children ages 6 and younger get in free.

Feb. 16-21: Disney on Ice "Let's Celebrate"
Catch all your family's favorite Disney characters on ice at Arco Arena this week. There will be a winter wonderland with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, a Halloween haunt with the most memorable villains, a "Very Merry Unbirthday" party, a royal ball with the Disney princesses and more.
Showings at 7 p.m. Feb. 16-17, showings at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Feb. 18. Showings at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Feb. 19-20. Showings at noon and 4 p.m. Feb. 21. Doors open an hour prior to show.

Feb. 17: Kids, Tweens and Teens Movie Afternoon
Your kids can catch a free screening of a recently released PG film at Franklin Library. Free popcorn and soda will be available.

Sutter's Fort's "By Land and By Sea" explores the journey and difficulties of immigrants coming to California by land and by sea. Help pack a wagon or trunk, decide whether you'd like to migrate by land or sea, use a nautical compass and learn from diaries and stories.

"Engineering Days" is a part of The Discovery Museum Science and Space Center's Discovery Weekends. This upcoming weekend is a celebration of the 60th anniversary of "Engineers Week." Children ages 12 and younger can build and launch a balloon rocket.

A screening of "New Muslim Cool" will be held at Colonial Theatre. The film is the story of Puerto Rican American rapper Hamza Perez after he ended his life as a drug dealer and committed himself to becoming a Muslim. Learn his story of religious commitment, raising his two children as a single father, starting a new religious community, and having his mosque raided by the FBI

Feb. 18: Hike of the Month
Head out for a hike with CSUS' Peak Adventures. This month the group will be heading to Clementine Lake, Auburn Recreation Area. Get in a short hike and discover a new nearby location.
The hike departs at 9 a.m. and will return in the late afternoon. Bring a camera and wear your hiking clothes.

Feb. 19: Sacred City Derby Girls' Season Opener
Catch the Sacred City Derby Girls' season opener at RollerKing. Sacred's Sacrificers will compete against the Redwood Roller All Stars. Sacred's Disciples will compete against the NorCal Rollers.

Feb. 19: Snowshoe Day Hike
Try out snowshoeing at Castle Peak with CSUS' Peak Adventures. Castle Peak is located directly across from Boreal Ski Resort. Pick your terrain from rolling hills or steep terrain. Dress warm! A pre-trip meeting will be held Feb. 16.

Feb. 19: Learn to Ski or Snowboard at Boreal
Join CSUS' Peak Adventures trip to Boreal where you can learn to ski or snowboard. There will be a pre-trip meeting Feb. 16. The trip includes transportation, guides, equipment, a lift ticket and a beginner lesson.

Feb. 19: Aerospace Museum of California's Annual Crab Feed
The Aerospace Museum will hold their annual Crab Feed featuring wine, crab, raffle, a silent and live auction. All the proceeds go to supporting museum programs and exhibits.

Former Shell Oil Company president John Hofmeister will speak as part of the Sacramento Speakers Series. He currently heads the not-for-profit nationwide membership association he founded, Citizens for Affordable Energy.
