Cheer Up, Buttercup! Jan. 3-Jan. 9

Happy new year! Hopefully you had a fun and safe New Years' celebration. Start off the first week of 2011 by trying out some different events. Take your kids to the puppet theater, visit a garden show, go to a Kings game or learn more about art and cooking. Happy 2011!

Jan. 6: "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" Puppet Art Theater
Bring the kids down to the library to catch the puppet art theater presentation of "The boy who cried wolf."

Jan. 7-9: California State Home and Garden Show
Head to the Sacramento Convention Center for the free Home and Garden Show. Learn fall gardening tips, meet craftsmen and learn how to do things yourself. For a list of exhibitors, visit here.
The show is open from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Jan. 9: Warehouse Clearance Book Sale
More than 50,000 adult and children's used books will be on clearance. Fill a grocery bag and pay only $6. Proceeds benefit Friends of the Sacramento Public Library.

Jan. 8-9: Jazzy Cats Cat Show
Jazzy Cats presents "Mardi Gras Madness" Cat Show. The show will feature a cat costume contest as well as a cage decoration contest.

Jan. 5: Cornell University Glee Club Performance
The Cornell University Glee Club has hit the road for their 2011 California Tour. The performance will feature classical and contemporary men's choral music, and an a cappella subset.

Jan. 5: Talib Kweli Performance
Talib Kweli will perform live in Sacramento with special performances by Cash Dreed, Lady Blue, J'Ras and Chozen (featuring DJ El Conductor) and DJ Crush Delight. It will be hosted by Bukue One.

Jan. 6: Lunch and Learn at the Crocker Art Museum
The public is invited to a 30-minute discussion focused on Claude Gillot's "Scene of Sorcery." The audience is encouraged to stay for lunch at the Crocker Cafe. The event is free with museum admission.
Crocker members get in free, adults admission is $10. Seniors and college students get in for $8. Youth ages 7-17 get in for $5, and children ages 6 and younger get in free.

Jan. 8: Crocker Art Museum's Backstory: "Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne and Beyond"
Crocker's Backstory series "offers a view of nationally acclaimed exhibitions that goes beyond what is viewed on the gallery walls, read in catalogues, or discussed in the media."

Jan. 8: Art Appetizer at the Crocker Art Museum
Take little nibbles of art during a 50-minute tour of the museum's recent exhibitions. The tour is never the same twice, and is free with museum admission.

Jan. 4: Kings vs. Atlanta Hawks
It's a new year and hopefully a new turn for the Kings' record. Cheer them on against the Atlanta Hawks, and catch Bibby back at Arco.
