Cheer Up, Buttercup! Mar. 14-Mar. 20

Brighten up this last bit of winter blues with some events this week and by helping the Japanese during this difficult time. Celebrate St. Patrick's Day safely and grab a cab. Also, join the Japanese tsunami relief efforts by donating money to the Red Cross, donating your airline miles, or helping other organizations.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY
St. Patrick's Day Party in the Park and Pub Party
Celebrate St. Patty's Day at de Vere's Irish Pub in grand style. Head over for the Party in the Park or Pub Party. This year's Party in the Park was created by de Vere's and the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, and will be held at Cesar Chavez Plaza located at 10th and J streets. Events will be held there all day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Entry costs $20 in advance, $25 day of. Proceeds will benefit Maryhouse. Complimentary safe rides will be provided for you and your car thanks to Last Call Sacramento from Cesar Chavez Plaza for Party in the Park patrons.
For those who want to stick to the pub, enjoy the Pub Party that will be held all day. The pub will open at 8 a.m. and the sidewalks will be shut at 11 a.m. for the extended sidewalk party. Check out the outdoor kitchen (corned beef and cabbage, anyone?) and stage for live entertainment. Admission is $10 and the celebration will continue until 8:30 p.m.

St. Patrick's Day Celebration at Fox & Goose
Get loosey goosey at Fox & Goose on St. Patrick's Day. With only a $2 cover, the celebration will begin at 8 p.m. and include traditional Irish pub food and live music by Griffin. Fill your stomach will corned beef and cabbage, Irish lamb stew, banger rolls and corned beef sandwiches. Wash it down with Guinness, Harp, Smithwick's, Irish car bomb or Irish whiskey.

Mar. 19: Hands on History - Hearth Home
Visitors to Sutter's Fort will learn the lengths to which women went during their journey west. See their daily efforts in preparing meals for their families, and providing comfort and stability during their unpredictable and dangerous move. There will be hands-on activities including sewing, weaving and candle dipping.

Mar. 19: Sacramento Regional Science and Engineering Fair
Students from the sixth to 12th grades will compete in the 2011 Sacramento Regional Science and Engineering Fair. The event will be held at Rosemont High School and include students from Sacramento, El Dorado, Placer, San Joaquin, Yolo, Yuba, Sutter, Solano and Amador counties.

Mar. 19: Kids' Engine Class
Children in the fifth to ninth grades (and their parent/guardian) can learn what makes up a Briggs and Stratton one cylinder engine, and how solids, liquids and gases come together to make them work.

Mar. 19-20: Water Wonders
The Discovery Space and Science Center celebrates the Clean Water Act and Water Quality Act with activities for the whole family like looking at pond critters through a microscope.

This promotion is going on every Saturday and Sunday of March. And check out Happy Tails cats at PetSmart at the corner of Watt Avenue and Arden Way from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
All cats are spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS. Happy Tails is an all-volunteer, no kill, cage free organization.

Mar. 19: Guided Nature Walk - Map and Compass Walk
Learn about map and compass basics at Effie Yeaw Nature Center with docent Jennifer Kerr. Kerr will teach participants how to read a map and use a compass, then participants will go on an easy walk to find specific locations on a map and answer questions about them.
This event is suggested for people ages 6 and older.
