Cheer Up, Peanut Buttercup! Oct. 25-Oct. 31

Yes, another week has begun. But that means a whole new entry of Cheer Up Buttercup, offering events in and around the Sacramento area for the upcoming week. This week is extra bountiful with a smorgasbord of Halloween celebration so remember your costume and designated driver. With a range of events from family-friendly to haunted houses and parties, you can cheer up, peanut buttercup!

FAMILY AND PETS:
Oct. 27-31: Disney on Ice
Disney on Ice is coming to Arco Arena for "Mickey and Minnie's Magical Journey." The famous eared duo will take the audience through Disney history including "The Little Mermaid," "The Lion King," "Peter Pan" and "Lilo & Stitch."
Showings are throughout the day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Doors open one hour before the shows. Don't forget $12 for parking which opens two hours before the show. Tickets range from $11.50 to $60. State employees have a discounted price. Children younger than 2 get in free.

Oct. 29-30: The Haunted Fort
See how creepy Sacramento history can be by visiting Sutter's Fort for The Haunted Fort tours. Historical characters will take visitors on hour-long tours by firelight.

Oct. 30-31: Boo at the Zoo
For two nights, The Sacramento Zoo will host a night of safe and spooky family fun. Rain or shine, bring your kids to the zoo to trick or treat at 17 candy stations, watch a magic show, participate in a costume dance party and play with ghoulish crafts. More than 4,000 people attended each night of last year's Boo at the Zoo.
The front half of the zoo will be open for this event. Riding the Spooky Train or Creepy Carousel is an additional fee. This event is appropriate for children 9 and younger.
General admission is $9. Zoo members get in for $5. Children 2 years and younger get in free. Buy tickets at the zoo between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. or order over the phone 916-808-5888.

If you're looking for an earlier Halloween option or your kids want to pre-party, take them trick or treating in Old Sac for the afternoon.

Oct. 30: Harvest Festival
Keep Halloween safe at Safetyville USA's Harvest Festival. Presented by Treehouse Inc., it is the second annual festival for young children and children with special needs. There will be face painting, crafts, trick or treating, food and more. The festival asks guests to not wear scary costumes.

Oct. 30: Costume Pooch Parade and Contest
Whether you use Halloween as an excuse to dress your dog up in funny costumes or are a fan of it year round, the Costume Pooch Parade and Contest is for you. The Midtown Business Association is presenting the event that benefits the United Animal Nations. The parade and contest is part of MBA's Midtown Trick or Treat.
All ages and breeds welcome, and all dogs must be on a leash. A "yappy hour" will be held after the event on the patio.

Oct 30: FREE! Midtown Trick or Treat
The Costume Pooch Parade and Contest (see above) is part of the Midtown Trick or Treat. Grab your costumes, kids and dogs and head to Midtown to trick or treat local businesses. Stop by Relles Florist (2400 J St.) for an extra spooky treat. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs must be on a leash. Oct. 30: The Mansion After Dark
Fans of state history, Sacramento history and the belief that really old houses are really haunted can visit the Governor's Mansion for a tour. With dim lighting, self-guided tours, Halloween decor and costumed characters, visitors can see the mansion in an eerier way. Storytellers will tell tales of past governors' lives.
Adult tickets are $6, youth (6 to 17 years old) get in for $4. Children 5 and younger get in free.

Ever wanted to share Octoberfest with your family but know it's not the best decision? Well now you can! Head over to Davis Saturday for the Oktobrewfest and Root Beer Float Run held at Sudwerk Restaurant and Brewery. Race Night Packet pick up starts at 4 p.m., kids' events start at 5 p.m. The 5K run/walk will start at 5:30 p.m. offering plenty of time for games, contests, food, music and brew after. Oct. 16: Kibble & Bids rescue fundraiser
The Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary, Inc. is holding their 10th annual Kibble and Bids fundraiser event. The group hopes to raise money for food, housing, transport and medical care for their dogs. The group was able to rescue 850 Golden Retrievers last year and is holding this year's event on a private estate along the Sacramento River. There will be an auction, music, entertainment and raffle.

Oct. 17: Ozomatli performs

Oct. 9: FREE! Kidical Mass
Take advantage of Sac's newly changed weather with a family bike ride. Why ride, you ask? Kidical Mass' blog says, "Riding a bike is fun. It gets the blood flowing. It’s the antidote for cabin fever. It lets us feel the wind in our face. It feels like flying."
Adults must accompany children, and get ready to take it easy as riders will be going as slowly as the kids need. The pre-event at 9 a.m. will include bike decorating and receiving a Kidical Mass bib number, as well as a family-friendly bike safety class. The big event will start with a helmet check and go into the 2.6 mile loop down M street to Santa Ynez and back to East Portal Park. Bring a picnic lunch and plenty of water for the post-event. There will be treats, playtime and a raffle.

Oct. 9: Ugliest Dog Contest and Cutest Canine Pageant
The inaugural event will bring together the dogs of all aesthetics, "where ugly is adorable." A raffle will be held for prizes including theatre tickets, Top Dawg restaurant deals, and Starbucks gift cards. The event will benefit the Sacramento Area Animal Coalition, the Sacramento SPCA, Puppy Love Rescue and the City of Sacramento Animal Care Services. If you'd like to enter your dog, it is $5 per dog and entry is open until 3 p.m. the day of the contest/pageant. For entry information, visit their website.

Oct. 9: The Rock Poster Society Festival of Rock Posters
Those headed to San Francisco for the weekend (with an eye for rock art and posters, to be exact) may want to visit Golden Gate Park's Hall of Flowers for this festival. Artists, dealers, collectors and fans will gather to see vintage to modern work.

Those interested in joining the Sac City Rollers are welcome to take part in the first part of a boot camp. The Rollers are prepping for the next round of tryouts and New Skater Training program for women ages 18 and older. The second part will take place in November or December on a date yet to be determined. Coaches will present to teach about the sport, team, practices and tryouts scheduled for early next year.
