Cheer Up, Buttercup! Oct. 18-Oct. 24

Sure, it's Monday. But that means a whole new entry of Cheer Up Buttercup, offering events in and around the Sacramento area for the upcoming week. With a range of events from family-friendly to arts and sports, you can cheer up, buttercup!

FAMILY AND PETS:
Oct. 21: FREE ADMISSION! Zombie Costumes and Make-up Workshop
Creep up your kids with a visit to Franklin Community Library. Learn make-up and costume techniques

Oct. 22-24: Safe and Super Halloween: Monster Mash
Bring the family to Fairytale Town the nights of Oct. 22-24 for a fun and safe Halloween spooktacular. There will be 17 candy stations, puppet shows, classic monsters roaming the grounds, hands-on activities and more. Fairytale Town will be closing at 2 p.m. the days of the celebration to get the park ready.
Tickets are available online, ready for pick up at will call. Children aged one and younger get in free. $7 for members, $10 for non-members.

Oct. 24: Sac Baby and Toddler Expo
Find the latest products and services for every step of the new-baby phase from maternity to toddler. Oct. 24: FREE ADMISSION! Capitol Family Fun Day held by UC Davis Children's Hospital
Bring the family to the third annual Capitol's west steps for Family Fun Day, intended to raise community awareness among families concerning: nutrition, healthy eating, exercise and fitness, childhood obesity prevention and injury prevention (bicycle, car seat and vehicle safety). Being held one week before Halloween, bring your child in their costume and stop by the Trick or Treat Safety booth for a prize. Doctors, nurses and specialists from UC Davis will be present.

Oct. 19: Shakira in concert
If you love shaking your hips to her music, or watching her shake her hips to her music, get your tickets now to see the Colombian singer perform at Arco Arena.

Oct. 22: Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey

Oct. 22: Ray Manzarek and Roy Rogers perform
Manzarek (co-founder of The Doors) and Roy Rogers will bring a night of rock and roll music and real life experiences to 24th Street Theater with special guests Electropoetic Coffee.

Oct. 23: Night of the Rolling Dead presented by the Sac City Rollers
Fans of roller derby, Sacramento sports and ghostly ghouls can catch the Sac City Rollers challenge the Derby Revolution of Bakersfield. There will be a beer garden, raffle prizes and vendors.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Events start at 7 p.m.
Children ages 4 to 12 get in for $6, adults for $10 ($15 day of) and VIP tickets cost $30. Children ages 3 and younger get in free.

The event by the American Cancer Society includes music, a non-competitive walk, those affected by breast cancer, family and friends. Donations greatly appreciated.

Oct. 19: FREE ADMISSION! "How Social Media Has Transformed the News" discussion
The Sacramento Social Media Club is presenting another discussion as part of its ongoing series concerning social media.
6:30 to 7 p.m. is check-in and socializing time, the panel discussion will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Stay for the afterparty if you'd like from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Oct. 21: FREE ADMISSION! Unveiling A Walking Tour of Central Oak Park
A new 32-page walking guide of Oak Park will be unveiled highlighting architectural and historic significance of the area through photographs and interpretation. The brochure was written by Dr. Robin Datel, a professor in CSUS' Geography Department. Datel will be present to discuss how she acquired her information, key themes of the tour and further details of some tour locations.

Oct. 23: Burlesque Variety Showcase
The Sizzling Sirens Burlesque Experience presents, "Hell on Heels." The group was founded to "create original, entertaining, visually dazzling and thought-provoking performance pieces and themed events to incite a freshness of perception for our audience."
Live music with Sexrat starts at 9 p.m. The show begins at 10 p.m.

Oct. 23: Hot Zombie Beauty Pageant
For the fourth year in a row, the Sacramento Horror Film Festival presents its Hot Zombie Beauty Pageant during its film fest. Grand prizes include the title of "Miss Hot Zombie Chick 2010," $200 at Fallen Angel Tattoo and more. Judging will be determined by gore and beauty; a one minute monologue and talent session; and zombie trivia knowledge.
