Cheer Up, Buttercup! Sep. 13-Sep. 19

Sure, it's Monday. But that means a whole new entry of Cheer Up Buttercup, offering events in and around the Sacramento area for the upcoming week. With a range of events from family-friendly to arts and sports, you can cheer up, buttercup!

FAMILY AND PETS:
Sep. 13: Healthy Back-to-School Lunches Nutrition Class
With childhood obesity on the rise and the importance of healthy eating habits, visit the Arden Hills Resort Club and Spa to learn easy ways to make healthy school lunches for your kids. Learn to get creative with healthy meals your children will love.

Sep. 16: FREE ADMISSION! Capitol Heart Walk
Join the American Heart Association (AHA) for this walk and/or Sep. 18 for the Start walk. Add heart-friendly exercise to your day and donate to help the AHA's programs and research.
According to the AHA's website, cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of all Americans, and one person dies every 38 seconds from the disease.

Sep. 18: FREE ADMISSION! Heart Walk
Start is the American Heart Association's campaign to get America moving. The walk raises funds for education and research. Sacramento has raised $306,805 to date, and the goal is $450,000. Sacramento is one of more than 300 American cities participating in Start Heart Walks.

Sep. 18: Bark for Life of Rancho Cordova
Stretch your paws and wag your tail. The American Cancer Society Bark for Life is a noncompetitive, fund-raising walk event for the pooches and their people. Demonstrations, contests and games will follow the walk.
Registration starts at 8:15 a.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:15 a.m. The walk goes from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Registration is $25 for the first dog, $10 for each additional dog per owner. Receive a raffle ticket for each registered dog. Dogs must be on a leash and be ready to clean up after your pets.

Sep. 18: Sacramento Zoo's Deaf Awareness Day
Visit the Sacramento Zoo for a special day for the deaf and hard of hearing community. The event is sponsored by NorCal Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Sep. 18-19: FREE ADMISSION! Friends of the Folsom Library Fall Book Sale
(Preview sale Sep. 17 5-8 p.m. $5)
Over 12,000 gently used books, DVDs, videos, CDs and much more in both children and adult materials will be on sale to support the Folsom Public Library. Grab a few raffle tickets for prizes from gift certificates to wine to clothing. Tickets will be available at the book sale, three for $2.

Sep. 18-19: 13th annual Sacramento Reptile Show
Check out the Exhibit Hall at the Sacramento Convention Center for the annual show that both showcases reptiles and educates the public. More than 100 vendors displaying 3,000 reptiles, and 11,000 visitors attended last year's show.
Children 5 and under get in free. Children ages 6 to 12 get in for $7, or $11 for a two-day pass. Ages 13 and over get in for $10, or $17 for a two-day pass.
Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sep. 19: FREE ADMISSION! Roseville Fall Antique Market
More than 50 vendors will be at the antique market selling furniture, decorative items, garden items, jewelry and hand crafted goods.

Sep. 14: FREE ADMISSION! "Burma VJ" showing
Presented by Amnesty International Sacramento Group, "Burma VJ" is a film by Burmese video-journalists exposing their country's repressive regime. Filmmaker is Anders Ostergaard. The showing is part of a series, Tuesday Films at Luna's Cafe.

Sep. 16: FREE ADMISSION! El Grito de Dolores at CSUS
Visit CSUS this week for "El Grito de Dolores," a play about the 200th Mexican Independence Day. It will be performed by Teatro Espejo and directed by Manuel Jose Pickett. The play will be performed in the University Union Ballroom.

Time Tested Books brings another great author to its location. Fellows will do a reading and signing for his book, Gay Bar. The book is a true story of a woman who operated a gay bar in Los Angeles during the 1950s.

Sep. 17: Sheryl Crow live performance

Sep. 17-19: Fourth annual American River Music Festival
The main stage will be held on the banks of the South Fork of the American River in the Coloma-Lotus Valley. There will be shuttle service, three riverfront campgrounds, a whitewater river trip, guided riverfront hike and a wine tasting trip.
The artist lineup includes: Jesse Winchester, Slaid Cleaves, Karla Bonoff, Handful of Luvin, Mike Beck and the Bohemian Saints, The California Honeydrops, Anne Weiss with David Jacobs-Strain, Walter Strauss Trio, Leroy Bell and His Only Friends, Berkely Hart, Ma Muse, Dana Hubbard, Forest Sun, Jonny Mojo, Garrin Benfield, The Bungee Jumping Cows and The Easy Leaves.
Tickets start at $15 for children and $35 for adults for a one day pass. Two day passes are available. Weekend passes including workshops and river passes range from $149 to $229. Sep. 19: FREE ADMISSION! Alan O'Connor and Cuno Barragan speak
Time Tested Books is bringing author/baseball historian Alan O'Connor and Sacramentan/baseball player Cuno Barragan to its store as part of "The Sacramento Living Library" series. Barragan played for the Sacramento Solons and the Chicago Cubs.

Sep. 15: 13th annual Seratonin Surge Charities Golf Tournament
Raise your clubs to raise funds for Seratonin Surge Charities. Sign up for the early morning back nine and/or the classic noontime 18 hole shotgun scramble.
Registration includes a Surge souvenir item, professional massage, barbecue lunch, awards ceremony and raffle entry. The 18 hole registration also includes a buffet lunch.
Proceeds will benefit the Maggi Carlile Memorial Scholarship Fund, Cure Breast Cancer, and the UC Davis School of Medicine's student-run community health clinics for the medically uninsured.

Sep. 17: FREE ADMISSION! Road repair clinic
Peak Adventures, a program organized by CSUS students, is holding a bike clinic to teach how to repair your bike while out on the road. The 45 minute clinic will teach you how to fix a flat on both front and back tires, and what to pack in a repair kit. They welcome you to bring your bike for hands on learning.

Sep. 17: Hike of the Month: Davis Arboretum
Peak Adventures, a program organized by CSUS students, is holding their hike of the month at the UC Davis Arboretum. It will be a short hike through the 100 acre property that features more than 22,000 trees and plants.
$18 for the public. Affiliates get in for $16 and Sac State students with ID join the hike for $12.

Sep. 18: Basic Rock Climbing class
Peak Adventures that brought Sep. 17 Hike of the Month and the bike repair clinic is offering a basic rock climbing class. It is an all day course to introduce beginners to outdoor rock climbing. Topics covered include: knot tying, belaying, general equipment use and basic climbing techniques. The fees include expert instruction by Peak Adventures climbing staff, transportation and all climbing gear.
$57 for the public, $51 for affiliates. Sac State students with ID get in the class for $40.
There will be a pre-trip meeting on Sep. 15 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Peak Adventures Challenge Center on the CSUS campus between Yosemite Hall and the soccer field.

Sep. 13: Author David Plouffe to speak
As part of the California Lectures series, author David Plouffe will speak at Crest Theatre. He is considered the chief architect of Barack Obama's campaign, and wrote the book, The Audacity to Win: The Inside Story and Lessons of Barack Obama’s Historic Victory.

Sep. 15-19: 47th annual National Championship Air Races & Air Show
If you've got an itch for a day trip, consider heading over to Reno, NV for the world's longest running air race. There will be real air racing among six classes of aircraft. There will be historic airplane displays and aerobatic exhibitions.
Air show performers include the Canadian Forces "Snowbirds," Kent Pietsch, David Martin and Greg Poe.

Sep. 17: No Reservations: An Evening with Anthony Bourdain
If you're a fan of cooking shows, you likely know who Anthony Bourdain is. He's an author, television host, chef and he's coming to Memorial Auditorium.
Tickets range from $36.50 to $85. The $85 VIP ticket includes a post-show meet and greet and book signing with Bourdain (call for availability).
