Cheer Up, Buttercup! Sep. 20-Sep. 26

Sure, it's Monday. But that means a whole new entry of Cheer Up Buttercup, offering events in and around the Sacramento area for the upcoming week. With a range of events from family-friendly to arts and sports, you can cheer up, buttercup!

FAMILY AND PETS:
Sep. 23: FREE ADMISSION! 43rd annual Native American Day
Presented by the State Tribal Liaisons of California, Native American Day will be celebrated at the Capitol. California Indian leaders will be speaking, games, informative booths, music and dancers will be present.

Sep. 25: Sixth annual "Painting for Paws" Art Show and Silent Auction
Bid on artwork created by the residents of Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary to benefit the animal rescue organization. There will also be food, wine and music.
$10 donation at the door.
Also, dine at Piatti Ristorante and Bar that night and mention you're dining for Happy Tails. Piatti will donate 10% of the bill to the sanctuary. For reservations, call Piatti at 916-475-3918.

Sep. 25-26: FREE ADMISSION! Weekend in Greece: Greek Culture and Food Festival
Presented by Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, the culture and food festival will feature live Greek music, traditional Greek costumes, cultural displays and guided tours of the church. For a schedule of events, visit their website.

Sep. 22: FREE ADMISSION! Sleep Now Moon performs
The folk rock/Americana band will perform at Sac State as part of the University Union UNIQUE Programs' Wednesday Nooner series.
All ages permitted. No alcohol will be sold or permitted at the venue.

Sep. 25: New Crocker Fund-raising Gala
The night will feature cocktails, dinner, dessert, dancing, a ceremonial gallery opening and a first glimpse of the new Crocker Art Museum. The Citizen Hotel is offering a special rate for gala attendees on a limited number of rooms the night of Sep. 25.
$1,000 per person. Friend of the Museum tickets: $5,000 per couple.

Sep. 26: Blues on the Green 2
Tracy Nelson, Dorothy Morrison, Annie Sampson and Angela Strehli of The Blues Broads as well as The Nick Gravenites Blues Band will be performing at Blues on the Green 2. Mick Martin will be the host and special guest. Feel free to bring low back chairs and blankets, but outside food and drink is prohibited. Food and drink will be available inside.
Parking is free.

SPORTS:

Sep. 21 & 22: Belay 101
Longing to learn to belay? Presented by Peak Adventures, a CSUS student-run group, learn the basics to belay. Learn how to use ropes and other safety equipment to keep a climbing partner safe, standard climbing commands, how to tie a double fisherman's knot, how to tie a figure-8 follow through knot and a pre-climb safety check. Not only will you learn all this, but by the end you'll be able to safely belay a climber on a wall and lower them back to the ground.
Leave your technical gear at home, it is provided on campus.
$18 for the public, $16 for affiliates. CSUS students with ID pay $12.

Sep. 25: Sacramento Mountain Lions vs. Florida Tuskers
Pro football in Sacramento? It has happened through the United Football League. Check out head coach Dennis Green lead the Mountain Lions against the Florida Tuskers in their home opener at Sac State's Hornet Stadium.

Sep. 23: FREE ADMISSION! Krist Novoselic lectures
Novoselic, famous for being Nirvana's bass player, will be speaking at Sac State as part of the campus' annual Constitution Week. He will be discussing his experience political experience and how social networking is changing the First Amendment right of assembly. Presented by the University Union UNIQUE Programs and the Community Engagement Center.

Sep. 25: FREE ADMISSION! What's Blooming in the Cemetery
See the beauty of the Sacramento Historic Cemetery with their garden tour. Guided by gardener and volunteer, Sharon Patrician, the tour will lead visitors through the historic cemetery's gardens.

Learn about Sacramento history as well as the history of early educators in this tour. Old Sacramento Museum docents will present the lives and experiences of early educators.

Join Sacramento Midtownians for the Midtown Bazaar. It's a shopping experience, farmers market, music fest and food fest all in one.

Sep. 25: Taste of Lodi Wine Camp
The inaugural event is an all day event before the Taste of Lodi. Start early in a Lodi vineyard picking grapes. A viticulture demonstration will teach about the growing process. Two vineyard tours follow and have lunch with the winemaker. Attend a wine blending class and a wine and food pairing class. A winery dinner will end the fruitful day. Receive a bottle of wine, Wine Camp hat and shirt, VIP entrance to the Taste of Lodi event Sep. 26 and one night hotel accommodation.
$450. Must be at least 21 years old to attend. Limited availability.

Sep. 26: Taste of Lodi
Take the chance to see the wine creations of Lodi wine country. Nearly 40 wineries will be present for wine tasting and wine seminars. There will also be chef demonstrations and food tasting.
