Cheer Up, Buttercup! Sep. 6-Sep. 12

Sure, it's Monday. But that means a whole new entry of Cheer Up Buttercup, offering events in and around the Sacramento area for the upcoming week. With a range of events from family-friendly to arts and sports, you can cheer up, buttercup!

FAMILY AND PETS:
Sep. 10-12: FREE ADMISSION! California State Home and Garden Show
Visit the Sacramento Convention Center this weekend for everything related to your home. From insulation to solar power to shutters to gutters, the convention will have everything you could think of to improve your abode. A list of exhibitors is available here.
Parking is $2 on the weekends in the city garage on 17th Street between Capitol and L Streets.
Free street parking on Sunday.
$6 preferred parking at 14th and H Streets.
Hours are Friday from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday is 10 a.m to 7 p.m. and Sunday is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sep. 11: FREE ADMISSION! Summer Block Party
The Washington Neighborhood Center (WNC) presents their summer block party. It will feature carnitas, a barbecue, art, bounce house, vendors and live music by Sabor Latin Jazz. All proceeds will benefit the WNC.

Sep. 11: FREE ADMISSION! Fifth annual Midtown Community Festival
Live music, kids' activities, merchandise booths, barbecue and a beer garden will all be set up in front of Rubicon Brewing Company.
The event is free for all, but the beer garden tickets are $20 advance, $25 the day of.

Sep. 11: FREE ADMISSION! Tour of Sacramento Historic City Cemetery
Go on a guided tour of the historic cemetery to learn more about the history of Sacramento and its citizens. Presented by the Old City Cemetery Committee, the Saturday morning tour of the garden cemetery will be led by retired educator and historian, Bill Mahan.

Sep. 11: Living History: Holding Down the Fort at Sutter's Fort
Visit Sutter's Fort on Saturday to see history come to life as the fort and its actors play out the hardships and everyday life of the time.
Adults 18 and over get in for $6, $4 for children ages 6 to 17. Children 5 and under get in free.

Sep. 11-12: California Capital Airshow
Held at Mather Airport. Will have interactive displays, and performances by the F-22 Raptors, Robosaurus, P-38 Lightning Strike, Tim Decker, Michael Goulian, John Klatt, Kent Pietsch and more!
Tickets: Kids 5 and under get in free, kids ages 6 to 12 get in for only $5. Everyone else gets in for $12. The Budweiser Family Package is $40 and includes two adult tickets, up to three children 12 years old and under, a parking pass and commemorative poster.
Just to warn you, parking is $10 per vehicle and they only accept cash. No in and out privileges, but there is free bike parking!

Sep. 7: Kate Gaffney to perform at Torch Club
Fans of Gaffney will be happy to hear that young singer-songwriter will be performing at the Torch Club every first Tuesday during "Kate and Friends: Acoustic Happy Hour." This week, she will be followed by the Lew Fratis Trio at 9 p.m.

Sep. 10-12: 12th Annual Power to the Peaceful Festival in San Francisco
If you like music, art, yoga and a mix of the three, you'll love the weekend event held at The Fillmore.
Sep. 10 - Pre-party with Michael Franti acoustically performing his new album, "The sound of sunshine." Special guests and C.A.R.E. Global Action Forum will be present. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Sep. 11 - Morning yoga will be available with Nicki Doane Modestini and Sianna Sherman from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park. Michael Franti will perform with Spearhead, Rebelution, Rupa & The April Fishes, SambaDa, Fort Knox Five and Sellasie. Golden Gate Park. Doors open at 8 p.m. $5 donation required. The after party will have Franti presenting The Rocking Heads.
Sep. 12 - Try the yoga and Brazilian dance workshops with Seane Corn and Rosangela Silvestre. Doors open at 10 a.m. A kids' matinee concert with more Franti and friends, kids' band, face painting, flag making, vendors and more. Doors open at 3 p.m.

Sep. 11: FREE ADMISSION! 14th Annual Skimfest 2010
If you're braver than the typical skimmer (a book or website skimmer), head over to Paradise Beach near Glenn Hall Park for the Skim Fest. Free to watch, but there are entry fees if you want to compete. $25 for beginners/intermediate skimmers, $35 for advanced. And hey, you get a Skimfest tee for registering. Registration starts at 9 a.m. There will be lots of prizes and cash prizes for the advanced division.

Sep. 12: Second Annual Atlas Open Weightlifting Competition
Local athletes will compete in this weightlifting competition put on by the Arden Hills Resort Club and Spa's strength and conditioning instructors. Olympic lifts such as the "Snatch" and the "Clean and Jerk" will be exhibited.
$5 for spectators.

Join Sacramento Midtownians for the Midtown Bazaar. It's a shopping experience, farmers market, music fest and food fest all in one.

Sep. 11-12: American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Orangevale
Camp out at Louis Pasteur Middle School in Orangevale for the Relay for Life event from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday. Teams are organized to compete in the relay benefiting the American Cancer Society, honoring cancer survivors and paying tribute to lives lost. The relay is divided into four events: a "Celebrate" ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, survivor's lap at 10:30 a.m., a "Remember" ceremony at 9 p.m. and finally a "Fight Back" ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Sep. 11: 16th annual California Brewers Festival
There will be more than 150 microbrews by more than 60 brewers from all over the country, plus a few international participants. For a list of brewers, visit here. The event is presented by the Rotary Club of Point West. There will be two live bands, Mexican food and southern food.

Sep. 12: Sacramento Antique Faire
Approximately 300 vendors from all over California and Oregon come to Sacramento for the Antique Faire every second Saturday. Browse through furniture, textiles, housewares, architectural pieces, clothes, jewelry, garden accessories, rugs and other collectibles. If your hunger should arise, take a break to enjoy caramel corn, coffee, pastries, juice, kabobs, french fries, tamales and more.
$3. Children under 16 get in free. Parking is free.
