Cheer Up, Buttercup! Sep. 27-Oct. 3

Sure, it's Monday. But that means a whole new entry of Cheer Up Buttercup, offering events in and around the Sacramento area for the upcoming week. With a range of events from family-friendly to arts and sports, you can cheer up, buttercup!

FAMILY AND PETS:

Sep. 29: FREE ADMISSION! Backyard organic gardening workshop
James Bridges will lead an adult beginner's workshop for organic gardening in your own backyard. Bridges will discuss how to choose a site and what soil to use.

Oct 2: FREE ADMISSION! Fair Oaks Library fall book sale
The library is holding its fall book sale in the Community Room. (All unsold books will be on clearance Monday, Oct. 4 when visitors can buy a bag of books for $5. The clearance will be from noon to 5 p.m.)

Oct. 2: Asian Food and Cultural Bazaar
The Sacramento Japanese United Methodist Church presents their fall bazaar featuring raffles, crafts, kids' games and smorgasbord of food.

MUSIC AND ARTS:
Sep. 29: FREE ADMISSION! Sister Crayon plays at Sac State
The manic trip-hop soul group will perform at Sac State as part of the University Union UNIQUE Programs' Wednesday Nooner series.
All ages permitted. No alcohol will be sold or permitted at the venue.

Oct. 1-2: Norcal Noisefest 2010
Nearly 40 artists and bands will be present for the all ages Norcal Noisefest. Visit their website for the list of performers that would cramp hands to type. Local performers include Uberkunst, Xome, Instagon, Chopstick, Liver Cancer, klowd, Mucky the Ducky, Jolthrower, Ink on Suit, Hypnotic Injection, Lifeliner and Tarantula Princess' Rat Skulls.
Held at Luna's Cafe on Friday and Sol Collective on Saturday.
$10 per day. $25 for an all weekend pass that includes a shirt, button and CD.

Oct. 1-2: "Vibrations of the Soul" tango show
Tango, ballet, salsa and bachata will be performed as part of the tango show. Ernesto Rassi directed the musical history depiction of tango. Along with dancing, there will singing and music.
$20 advance tickets, $25 at the door. Advance ticket sales end Sep. 30.

Oct. 3: "A Place Called Sacramento" Film Festival
Nine selected film projects will be shown for the 2010 film festival. The films include: "Are you my girlfriend"; "Three words for Dacia"; "Bar TIME"; "Treasure chest of South Sacramento"; "War at home"; "The golden tree"; "Butterscotch"; "Thugs need hugs" and "Little Thieves."

Oct. 2: Yoga Seed Collective grand opening
The city's first nonprofit yoga studio will hold its grand opening. The celebration will begin with a chanting and studio blessing from 3 to 4 p.m. A yoga class will follow until 5:30 p.m. A community potluck will take place until 7:30 p.m. Join in the drum circle from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The studio is also looking for donations of gently-used yoga mats, blankets and props.

Oct. 2: FREE! The Medical Bag History Tour
Led by Dr. Bob LaPerriere, the Medical Bag Tour will teach about the diseases of the Gold Rush and visit the grave sites of physicians who treated them.
The tour is organized by the Old City Cemetery Committee, Inc. Free parking across the street.
