Cheer Up, Buttercup! Nov. 1-Nov. 7

The week after a Halloween weekend may seem like a time to relax or slow down, but there are still plenty of things happening in Sacramento. The holidays are coming up quickly, and early preparations are already in the works. From early shopping to an annual ice rink, this week's "Cheer Up, Buttercup" can help you find it. And remember, tomorrow is voting day!!

FAMILY AND PETS
Nov. 4: FREE ADMISSION! Healthy Families, Healthy Children Wine and Cheese Fundraiser
The Healthy Marriage Project presents an evening of stories from the families they have touched, and how the organization has grown from a small group to a nationally recognized organization.

Nov. 4: Iceland Ice Arena's 70th Anniversary Celebration
The historic Iceland suffered a massive fire on March 28. The walls still stand but most wood structures are no more. Iceland is celebrating its 70th anniversary by reopening, and donations are greatly appreciated.

Nov. 5: Downtown Holiday Ice Rink Opens
It may seem as though the holiday preparations have started early, but with all the store ads comes the re-opening of the Westfield Downtown Plaza ice rink. Skate while it lasts! The rink will be open until Jan. 17.
The rink will offer Saturday skating lessons. Individual lessons are $20. A three-week session is $50.
$8 for two hours. $2 for skate rentals. Cash only.
The rink will open noon to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. On Fridays and Saturdays, the rink will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Hours of operation may be altered due to weather conditions.

Nov. 5: "A Night of Hope" with Joel and Victoria Osteen
An outreach of Joel Osteen Ministries, the Osteens will be at Arco Arena. Music performances include Cindy Cruse Ratcliff, Dadra Greathouse, Steve Crawford and the Lakewood Band and Ensemble.

Nov. 5: FREE ADMISSION! 23rd Annual Asian Community Center Craft and Bake Sale
The 23rd annual ACC Craft and Bake Sale will feature, well, crafts and baked goods in addition to white elephant items, potted plants and raffle prizes.
The raffle will be drawn at 4 p.m. and prizes include a $250 cash prize and a 19" flat screen LCD HD television.

Nov. 5-6: FREE ADMISSION! Fall and Winter Children's and Maternity Consignment Sale
Hundreds of local families are involved in selling gently used children's and maternity clothing. Items include baby to junior size clothing and maternity clothing from size XS to XXXL. Also for sale will be toys, furniture, bedding, decorations, scrapbooking supplies, school supplies, books, videos, highchairs, swings, strollers and much more.
The sale will take place from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Nov. 6: Seventh Annual Run for a Safe Haven
Run for a Safe Haven is a fundraising 5K run/walk for My Sister's House services. My Sister's House is a non-profit organization to "specifically identify and address the unique needs of women and children impacted by domestic violence in the Central Valley's highly diverse Asian and Pacific Islander community."
Late registration starts at 8 a.m. Kids' half mile starts at 8:30 a.m. The 5K run/walk starts at 9 a.m.

Nov. 7: Wedding Fair
Planners and brides-to-be can enjoy this wedding fair featuring two fashion shows, photographers, florists and entertainers. Shop for transportation, gowns and more from wedding professionals.

Nov. 4: FREE ADMISSION! "Inception" Screening
If you missed the hit 2010 film, catch a free screening at Sac State presented by the college's UNIQUE Programs. Written, produced and directed by Christopher Nolan, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, and Michael Caine.

Hello Kitty and friends are on an eight week Small Gift Mobile pop-up tour from San Francisco to New York City. For those who remember collecting colorful pencil holders and wallets to the more serious collectors, the tour will offer merchandise you can't find at just any other Sanrio store. Nov. 7: FREE ADMISSION! Holiday Shopportunity and Craft Faire
The fifth annual event will feature more than 70 vendors to help find your ideal holiday items and gifts. There will also be food, raffles and free parking.
Bring a small, unwrapped gift for a child age 11 to 16 to donate to the Folsom Police Christmas Basket Program.
