Cheer Up, Buttercup! Nov. 22-Nov. 28

Whether you need to entertain some family in town or you want to get outside (the beautiful foliage won't last too long), there are plenty of events to fill your calendar with. Sure, it's Monday. But the holidays are approaching at full speed and there are always things to do in Sacramento.

FAMILY AND PETS
Nov. 24: FREE ADMISSION! Old Sacramento Tree Lighting Ceremony
Old Sacramento will officially kick off the holiday season with the Nov. 24 tree lighting and Theatre of Lights. Father Christmas will visit Old Sac, the Salvation Army Brass Band will perform and Mayor Kevin Johnson will flip the switch to light the tree.

Nov. 25-28: Sacramento Hmong New Year
The event will have two stages and includes special guest artists and entertainers, multi-cultural shows, cultural competitions, group dance performances, beauty pageant, cultural activities and shows.
$4 admission. Children 5 and younger as well as seniors 66 and older get in free. Parking is $10.

Nov. 26: FREE ADMISSION! Exactly! Fairytale Town Free Admission Day
Bring a canned good to Fairytale Town the day after Thanksgiving and receive free admission for the whole family! All donations will be given to the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services for their Holiday Spirit of Giving Food Drive. There will be an arts and crafts activity and puppet shows by Puppet Art Theater. Puppet show tickets are $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers.

Nov. 26-28: Polar Express Ride
The California State Railroad Museum presents the "Polar Express." An hour-long train ride will take visitors to the "North Pole." Riders will enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. Enjoy the ride with the train conductor, dancing waiters and a ghostly hobo on the way to see Saint Nick.
Coach tickets are $26 for adults and $18 for youth ages 2-17. First class tickets are $42 for adults and $34 for youth ages 2-17.

Nov. 26-27: Indian Museum Arts and Crafts Holiday Fair
Enjoy two days of shopping at the California State Indian Museum. California artisans will be selling: jewelry; pottery; basketry; decorated gourds; soapstone and elkhorn carvings; ornaments and more.
Adults get in for $3, youth ages 6 to 17 get in for $2. Children 5 and younger get in free. The museum accepts cash or check only.

Nov. 26-28: Dinosaur Days
Head to Discovery Museum Science and Space Center for their Dinosaur Days. There will be a classroom display featuring dinosaur specimens to see and touch, appropriate for children ages 4 to 12. "The Bone Zone" exhibit will have skeletons, skulls and bone health information. Kids can make tyrannosaur paper skeletons to take home.

Families and friends will enjoy this delicious decorating cookie class presented by Friends of Franklin Library.

Nov. 28: FREE ADMISSION! 11th Annual Cordova Community Christmas Tree Lighting
Enjoy music, games, crafts, hay and train rides, a visit from Santa and of course, the tree lighting! The lighting will occur at 7:30 p.m. and is presented by the Cordova Community Council.

Nov. 22: The Forgotten Carols
The family can enjoy a night of music and the story of the true meaning of Christmas. It will star Michael McLean.

Nov. 26: Mortal Komedy with Jesse Fernandez
There will be video games, comedians and competition. Laugh as two "Mortal Komedians" battle as Jesse Fernandez hosts. Fernandez is the 2010 champion of National College Funny Film Competition.

Nov. 26-28: W. Kamau Bell Performs
You may have seen Bell in the social/political comedy world. And perhaps you may have caught his Bay Area solo show, "The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour." The man named "Comedian of the Year" by the SF Weekly last year will be performing at Punch Line Comedy Club in Sacramento.
Tickets range $13-$16.

Nov. 27: Super Love Jones: Love Poem Competition Finals
The competition will feature the final four Best Love Poets determined by the Love Jones Slam Finals: Taifa Jamari, Terry Moore, He Spit Fire, and Claudia Epperson. The event will be hosted by J'anelle Avery.

Nov. 27: Spotlight Improv Showcase
See local improvisers as well as special out-of-town guests perform in this PG-13 show. It will feature Sensitive PonyTail. It will be hosted by Comedy Spot performer and instructor Ted Samson.

Nov. 26-28: Holiday Arts and Crafts Festival
The Crocker Art Museum and the Creative Arts League of Sacramento present this festival featuring more than 100 regional artists and craftspeople. Bring the kids to take photos with the Victorian Santa. For sale will be jewelry, gourmet foods, ceramics, paintings, holiday items and more.
Parking is free. The festival will be open Nov. 26 from 1-7 p.m. Nov. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Nov. 27: The Praise of Christmas
Get in the Christmas mood early with the Sacramento Baroque Soloists' arrangement of music. There will be a small ensemble with vocals, violins, flute, cello, lute and harpsichord.

Nov. 25: 17th Annual Run to Feed the Hungry
Work off some turkey and help a great cause! Run to Feed the Hungry offers a 5K and 10K fun run or walk through East Sacramento. The event is owned and operated by Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services and has grown quite a following in Sacramento. All proceeds benefit SFBFS programs.
Adults and virtual runners register for $35. Children ages 15 and younger register for $20.Teams' members register for $50.
Race day registration and pre-registration packet pick-up are held from 7:30-9:30 a.m. No dogs, roller blades, bikes, scooters or skateboards. No strollers, baby joggers or wagons for the 5K or 10K timed races. For more logistics, visit here.
